Established in 1935 in response to the severe drought of the 1920’s, The Worcester Veld Reserve is the propagation of seeds of indigenous veld species, unique to the area. The requirement was to provide help to the farmers to improve their veld, which had already severely deteriorated because of the drought. The reserve covers 110 hectares, 25 of which are arable. The long-term rainfall is 212 mm per year with the highest annual rainfall of 426 mm.
Elsenburg research farm, just eight kilometers outside of Stellenbosch is home to the corporate office of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. Services offered include supporting research and extension services to the whole province. Research projects on Elsenburg focuses on various problems as identified in association with various industry branches.
Located just two kilometres east of the N7, Langgewens Research Farm is located between Malmesbury and Moorreesburg in the Swartland. The farm covers an area of about 500 hectares with an average annual rainfall of about 395mm. Established in 1926, the farm was established with infrastructure and staff to support to researchers.
Located southwest of George in the Eden district, The Outeniqua Research Farm serves the area from the Tsitsikamma to Caledon. Founded in 1953, the farm was established for agricultural research, providing science-based solutions in response to challenges faced by farmers in the area.
Situated in the Overberg district, the Tygerhoek Research Farm serves the areas around Caledon in the west, Swellendam in the east, Bredasdorp in the south and Riviersonderend in the north. Established in 1960, this research facility covers 2,760 ha, with approximately 500 ha of arable.
Situated near Lamberts bay, The Nortier Research Farm serves the North West region (from Bitterfontein in the north to Elands Bay and Citrusdal in the south) of the Western Cape. Research projects underway at the farm contribute to the knowledge of extensive livestock production, with research into veld management and animal production.
