‘n Onlangse Nasie In Gesprek sessie is by Nampo buite Bothaville gehou.

A recent “Nasie In Gesprek” session was held at Nampo outside Bothaville. Many experts participated. The theme was about the impact of load shedding on agriculture. However, practical solutions that include combined power generation methods were discussed. Financing options for farmers were also investigated.
The closure of two mushroom farms in the first quarter of the year led to shortages of the fungi in question. A devastating fire in KwaZulu-Natal also contributed to an ongoing shortage. Dr Adriaan Smit is Head of the South African Gourmet Mushroom Academy in Somerset West in the Western Cape. He talks about further reasons which could have contributed to this matter. We also discuss possible solutions. Dr Smit joins us from Grenada in Spain.

In RSG Landbou we investigate insect species that you may not have known existed such as flies with long tongues, giant moths and some foreign bees. According to Professor Bruce Anderson of Stellenbosch University, the story of pollination is an almost invisible micro-wonderworld of pollen and its predestined path. He is particularly interested in why plants look the way they do. Blueberries, with their North American origins, have a particularly interesting story related to this, and it's certainly about much more than birds and bees.
