RSG LANDBOU, SATERDAG 8 MEI 2021

Dr Anri Manderson started Like Mountains in 2015 as a boutique consultancy firm, which focused on project management for international development agencies that were working with organic smallholder farmers in South Africa. The name comes from a song by David O’Dowda, called Mountains.

After five years of supporting smallholder farmers to produce and market their organic vegetables, she realised the organic demand in South Africa was never going to absorb sufficient produce to enable smallholders to really grow their businesses. As a result, she started investigating value-adding opportunities.

RSG LANDBOU, VRYDAG 7 MEI 2021

Research carried out by a doctoral student at Stellenbosch University could pave the way to putting SA's honeybush tea on the global map. The brew has long been championed for its anitoxidant properties.

Its spread to the palates of the world has been hampered by a lack of quantifiable agreement on how a great cup of honeybush tea should look, smell and taste.

That may all change following the work done by PhD student Brigitte du Preez, whose dissertation focuses on how to describe and quantify the differences between brews in a way that improves quality control.
