Tomorrow, Friday, 18 October 2019, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture will host and commemorate the World Food Day(WFD) in Murraysburg, Central Karoo.

Commemorated annually on 16 October, the founding day of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, WFD was proclaimed in 1979 by the conference of the FAO and endorsed by the General Assembly in 1980 as a day of observance in consideration of the fact that ‘food is a requisite for human survival and wellbeing’.

The theme for the 2019 WFD is ‘Healthy Diets for a Zero Hunger World’.

As a contribution towards household food security, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture is supporting a total of 7 community projects and 76 households within Murraysburg with the means to produce their own food.

One of the main traditions of the event is the creation of a ‘food mountain’ of non-perishable food stuff which will be donated to needy organizations in the area.

ALL MEDIA ARE INVITED TO ATTEND. (There will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs).
