Temperature – July 2010

Monthly mean maximum temperatures ranged between 12°C over the mountainous areas of the west and escarpment north of the Central Karoo to about 24°C over the middle interior of the Central Karoo and east of Van Rhynsdorp. 

Monthly mean minimum temperatures: Areas adjacent to the coast experienced temperatures 6-12°C, over the mountain ranges temperatures dropped to 3-6°C, and temperatures 0-3°C were experienced on higher mountains, especially on the northern and north eastern border of the Western Cape.  More extreme less than zero were experienced north of Murraysburg.


Temperature – July 2010 compared to July 2009

Mean monthly maximum temperatures for this year were more or less the same as last year, maybe slightly lower than last year, especially in the lower southern parts of the province.  The area north of Beaufort West, isolated areas (Caledon and Piketberg) indicate above normal max temperatures.

Mean monthly minimum temperatures for this year were slightly lower than last year for most of the Western Cape.  The area between Swellendam and Sutherland indicate more severe lower minimum temperatures for this year.  Except for the higher ground, the Beaufort West area revealed normal minimum temperatures.


Temperature – July 2010 compared with long-term

In general normal to slightly above normal maximum temperatures (2 to 3°C) prevailed this year..Higher maximum temperatures (3 to 4°C) existed in the Central Karoo, specifically Merweville to Prince Albert region as well as the region north of Lambert’s Bay, being more extreme (4 to 5°C) stretching from south to the eastern side of Vanrhynsdorp, right up and east into the Northern Cape province. 

Monthly average minimum temperatures were below normal this year (less than -2°C) in mostly mountainous parts of the province, emphasising the snow conditions that prevailed in these mountains during July.  Most extreme average minimum temperatures (less than 3°C) were observed in the Murraysburg region.  Isolated areas which experienced normal to above normal monthly average minimum temperatures (>+2°C) included the Overberg DM, the Cape Town Metropole to Wellington to Piketberg area.  .
