Rainfall for September 2004
Cold fronts with associated upper air troughs caused welcome rain over large parts of the winter rainfall area. Around the 20th of the month, an upper air cut off low-pressure system even caused some rain as far north as the Fish river canyon. While rain over the western parts of the winter rainfall area was confined to the period form, the 11th to the 20th of September, welcome rain fell over coastal areas and adjacent interior of the southern Cape throughout the month. This was also in conjunction with low pressure systems and ridging high pressure systems that was responsible for rain over the central, south-eastern and eastern parts of the country. These rain producing systems caused rain over the eastern parts of the western Cape by the end of the month.
Rainfall totals over the extreme southwestern parts of the winter rainfall areas as well as over the Boland ranged between 40mm and 120mm, which represents normal to above normal rainfall over these areas. Over the rest of the western parts of the winter rainfall areas, rainfall totals between 20mm and 40mm prevailed, decreasing to about 15mm as one moves northward up the west coast and western escarpment. However, this represents above normal rainfall over these northern parts of the west coast and escarpment for September.
Along the southern coast and adjacent areas, rainfall totals for September increased from about 40mm in the west to 170mm in the east, representing above normal rainfall from George eastward. Over the eastern parts of the Western cape interior, early spring rain caused rainfall totals in the order of 20mm and more, representing above normal rainfall over these areas as well. The central parts of the western cape interior were dry during September.
