Comments on dam levels and stock watering points in the regions

BOLAND and SWARTLAND

Availability of water for stock at watering points: Good 100%.

LITTLE KAROO

The situation regarding irrigation in important areas can be described as reasonable to good. In comparison to last year, the current situation is more favourable.

The mountain streams from the Vleiland area in Laingsburg adjacent to the Little Karoo, including the Gang and other areas next to the Little Karoo, appear to be normal for this time of the year, probably due to the good rain season from March onwards to the end of the winter. The Touwsriver area is  experiencing a water shortage crisis. The quality of water is extremely poor (brackish). Underground sources are drying up. Water is generally being pumped at 75m. Irrigation companies can barely supply these larger pumps for installation purposes and boring machines are actively exploring additional water reserves. Risks are extremely high in obtaining sufficient and suitable water in order to irrigate fruit and vegetables optimally.

Government assistance of R1.7 million has been approved for flood damage caused by the broken Bellair dam.

Availability of water for stock at watering points: Good 85%, Reasonable 10%, Poor 5%.

In certain areas the levels of the boreholes are lower due to low rainfall.

SOUTH COAST

The inflow in private dams in the Caledon area is low. This could cause water problems from next February and March onwards, should it not rain.

Availability of water for stock at watering points: Good 100%.

The levels of those dams that are used for watering points in the Caledon area are declining.

NORTH WEST

The Clanwilliam dam level is lower compared to the level of 2002.

Availability of water for stock at watering points: Reasonable 50%, Poor 50%.
