The programme for Technology, Research and Development administers six research farms - our laboratories on the ground! These farms are used for trials for all three institutes.

ELSENBURG

Elsenburg research farm houses the head office of the Department of Agriculture: Western Cape. Supporting research and extension services are delivered to the whole province.
Research projects on Elsenburg focuses on various non-resource specific problems as identified in association with various industry branches.
The province's Percheron stud can be found here.
The farm also houses the Cape Institute for Agricultural Training: Elsenburg. Various qualifications are offered here.

KROMME RHEE

Kromme Rhee is situated just outside of Stellenbosch. This farm is mainly utilised for ostrich and sheep grazing and feeding experiments. The whole province is serviced from this farm with advice regarding sheep and ostrich feeding and management.

WORCESTER VELD RESERVE

The Worcester veld reserve specialises in the cultivation of seed and drought resistant plants for fodder and edible grasses, bushes and shrubs. Read more about this farm here.

TYGERHOEK

Tygerhoek near Riviersonderend services the Rûens areas of the Southern Cape. The service area covers 780 000ha of which about 85% is cultivated. A non-seasonal rainfall pattern is prevalent in the area east of Riviersonderend with a 65:35% distribution between winter and summer. The main farming activities are wheat, barley, sheep, and diary cattle.

OUDTSHOORN

The Oudtshoorn experiment farm services the Karoo farming area from Barrydale to Uniondale. This area covers around 1,4million ha of which 53 000ha is irrigated. The rainfall is between 200-300mm per year. Extensive stock farming takes place in the stock/grazing areas with intensive fruit farming under irrigation. Ostrich farming is the main branch.

OUTENIQUA

Outeniqua near George services the high rainfall Langeberg foothill areas from Botrivier in the west to Knysna in the east. The service area run to 400 000 ha of which just over 50% is cultivated. The rainfall of the area varies between 600 and 1000mm per year with a non-seasonal distribution. Research projects focus on intensive dairy systems and established pasture.
