Aquaculture management system for use by small-scale and commercial fish farmers of Western Cape Province

A benchmarking was conducted by AISA in 2006. The Western Cape component of survey was extracted and used as a basis for this project. The project will include the updating of aquaculture statistics in the Western Cape (Survey) and the mapping of relevant aquaculture information to describe the potential of aquaculture development in the Western Cape.

1 Survey
Objective
-to update the aquaculture sector statistics in the Western Cape Province which feeds into the international statistics of the FAO.

Main idea
- provide reliable statistics to industry and government in order to establish the   developmental opportunities within a sector

How are we going to conduct the survey?
- A questionnaire based on the AISA) benchmarking survey is available on DoA’s website and the AISA website (www.ai-sa.org.za).
- The survey will be updated every three years.
- Industry is encouraged to download the .pdf questionnaire and send it back to Refiloe Thobejane, Department of Agriculture: Western Cape, Private Bag X1, ELSENBURG, 7606. Tel. (021) 808 5325; e-mail: RefiloeT@elsenburg.com.
- Deadline for submission is 31 December 2007.

Expectation from the map
-provide information on the location of roads, rivers, dams, nature conservation area, existing aquaculture farms (fresh and marine), etc.
-ultimately this information could guide where appropriate development for aquaculture can take place.
