Freshwater mullet (Myxus Capensis)

Freshwater Mullet
(Myxus Capensis)

Description
The absence of adipose eyelids and a pointed scale at the base of the pectoral fin distinguish this species from other mullets. Freshwater mullet are silver grey in color. Origin of final fin in advance of origin of second dorsal fin.

Distribution
East coastal estuaries and rivers from the Breë River to Kosi Bay. Endemic to Southern Africa.

Biology
Feeds on benthic algae and small invertebrates over muddy bottom. More common in Cape rivers than other mullet species. Breeds at sea; throughout the year. Juveniles move into estuaries and enter rivers in late winter or early spring. Females remain in freshwater for 7 years, males for 4 years. Returns to estuaries before maturing sexually prior to breeding.
