What is Aquaculture?
Aquaculture is defined as the propagation, improvement, trade or rearing of aquatic organisms (plant and animal) in controlled or selected aquatic environments (fresh, sea or brackish waters) for any commercial, subsitence, recreational or other public or private purpose.
What do we do?
The Western Cape Department of Agriculture has played an active role in the development of Aquaculture in the province for the last decade. Research is conducted to investigate different production systems ie extensive, semi-intensive and intensive. Research is undertaken in association with Stellenbosch University at the facilities of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture.
The Department also works in collaboration with the Aquaculture Institute of South Africa (AISA) as well as the other provincial departments such as Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT), Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP) as well as Cape Nature Conservation.

A survey is launched as part of the current research project entitled: Aquaculture management system for use by small-scale and commercial fish farmers of Western Cape Province. The project will include the updating of aquaculture statistics in the Western Cape (Survey) and the mapping of relevant aquaculture information to describe the potential of aquaculture development in the Western Cape.
