The sub-division and rezoning of agricultural land is based on the five principles of sustainable agriculture, namely:
- Social acceptability,
- Economic viability,
- Ecological feasibility,
- Reasonable production, and
- Sound security.
A healthy balance between these principles is necessary when evaluating a proposal. This evaluation process will be assisted by the areawide projects in that it will pro-actively plan future land use.
This field of the sub programme: LandCares work creates various exciting opportunities in agriculture which has a direct influence on the economic development of the Western Cape. These opportunities include:
- Agri-tourism: guesthouses and holiday accommodation.
- Value adding: for example, a cheese factory or a wine cellar.
- Creating sustainable units: intensifying (e.g. irrigation) and thereby increasing the number of farmers and the industry.
- Farm worker housing: increasing the property rights of farm labourers.
- Other purposes: e.g. towns, biospheres, nature reserves, and smallholdings for nurseries and tunnel farming.
