Western Cape Government congratulates Leopard's Leap on huge export deal to China
Gerrit van Rensburg, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development yesterday congratulated and wished Leopard's Leap Wines well with a large wine export deal from the Western Cape Province to China. "The Western Cape Government supports this venture, as it will help grow the provincial economy, which will lead to job creation and poverty reduction amongst our citizens", Van Rensburg said. Farm Worker of the Year 2011: SAGEAS McKENNA
Sageas McKenna from the Little Karoo is the 2011 Western Cape Farm Worker of the Year. He was announced the winner by Patricia de Lille, Executive Mayor of Cape Town. As his prize he received R20 000, a fully paid overseas trip, a course at the University of Stellenbosch and a gold coin from SA Coin.
Sageas was selected from more than 90 category winners from all the regions in the Western Cape.
Sageas also received a brand new vehicle from his employer, Saag and Hazel Jonker from Oudtshoorn.
The 2011 provincial category winners are: Andries Baardman (General Worker), Esmé Klaaste (Administration), Hans Mostert (Irrigation), Olga Johannes (Animal Production), Janneman Heyns (Technical Operator), Jackie de Ruiter (Tractor Driver), John Jacobus Antonie (Junior Management), Saul Lintnaar (Middle Management) and Sageas McKenna (Senior Management). Thabo Bennedict Phakela received the Agri Expo incentive award.

World Food Day brings great relief to Doringbaai
"The Western Cape Department of Agriculture in partnership with the Matzikama Local Municipality celebrated World Food Day at Doringbaai on the West Coast today. A helicopter view of this town and its inhabitant households tells the tale of underdevelopment, poverty and lack of resources. The sea has always been the main source of economic activity in Doringbaai, but unfortunately the commercial fishing operations closed down a number of years ago". Read more here.

Ostrich industry hit with another setback
"Ostrich exports to the EU were shut down again today. This ban comes less than a week after exports from all South African areas outside of Oudtshoorn resumed this week. Read more here.
Western Cape Department of Agriculture crowned as best Department in South Africa.
"The Western Cape Department of Agriculture was recently crowned as the best department in South Africa for its annual reporting by the South African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA). The Department competed against other provincial and national departments, and walked away with the coveted Overall Winner award by scoring an impressive 96.55% for its Annual Report. Minister investigates water problem on Paarl farm
Gerrit van Rensburg, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, together with Gesie van Deventer, Drakenstein Mayor, paid a visit to Paarl farmer, JT Basson, earlier today. Basson has been issued with a warning that his irrigation water supply will be cut within 24 hours by the Department of Water Affairs if drinking water is not restored to ten houses on his land. The Western Cape-Burgundy Wine Exchange Programme celebrated it's 10th birthday on a high note with the launch of a new book: Bourgogne Western Cape: Vines and Life, encounters and sharing" by Florence Zito and Philippe Maupetit. The book reflects on 10 years of co-operation, especailly in the agricultural field, portraying a number of praticipating farmers, farmworkers and training institutions. Read more here

CAPE Partners' Conference, Elsenburg
The 2011 CAPE Partners' Conference will be held on 23 and 24 June 2011 and focuses on the interface between Biodiversity Conservation and Agriculture. This year the conference aims to showcase the successful collaborative interventions that have occurred between Biodiversity Conservation and Agriculture during the first phase of the CAPE programme and is jointly hosted by CAPE Partners: SANBI, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and WWF-SA through the GreenChoice Alliance. The conference will be held at the Percheron Hall, Elsenburg Agricultural Training College at Elsenburg just outside of Stellenbosch. Read more here

Western Cape discusses agricultural matters with British Government
Gerrit van Rensburg, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development yesterday (26/05) held a meeting on invitation from the British Minister of State for Agriculture and Food as part of a one week visit to the UK. "We discussed Western Cape- UK trade relations, and how we could improve our long standing relationship", Van Rensburg said. Read more here

AHS: Restrictions on horse movement
The acting Chief Director of Veterinary Services in the Western Cape, Dr. P. Koen has announced that restrictions have been placed on all direct horse movements to the Western Cape African Horse Sickness (AHS) Control Area from all other provinces, with immediate effect. Read more here.
Grooms co-operative sells at yearling sales
On 26 January 2011 many years of hard work and training will finally come to culmination when three of the Western Cape's five grooms' co-operative schemes will sell their thoroughbred horses at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale being held at the CTICC. Read more.
