About agri-tourism and pluriactivity

by Riaan Nowers

In a world where specialisation is the order of the day, agriculture has proven that diversification is the sound option needed to reach sustainable agricultural goals.

In the midst of changing climatic patterns, adverse weather phenomena, and inter- and intra-regional competition for markets and resources, farmers increasingly need to identify value-adding possibilities to increase the sustainable level of farm profit.

Agriculture has a wide range of resources that is unsuitable for traditional farming practices. This gives the entrepreneur access to various opportunities to use these resources in a manner that is sustainable on the one hand, while also adding value to the net farm income.

Pluriactivity refers to the diversified nature of a business where more than one activity or enterprise is combined to enhance agricultural income, productivity and cash-flow, as well as to lower farming risk.

This diversified nature utilises a variety of resources, thereby contributing to sustainable agriculture should it be managed correctly.

Pluriactivity at farm level not only refers to a combination of agricultural enterprises, but also to a combination of ways to differentiate between products and services in order to add value to it.
