Dairy cows in the Western Cape

There are about 160 000 producing dairy cows in South Africa, and about 21 000 in the Western Cape alone. About 2.2 billion litres of milk is produced in the country, and the Western Cape produces 24.5% of this total - almost a quarter.

In the Western Cape, the most common dairy cow breeds are:
Holstein-Friesian
Jersey
What happens to all this milk that is produced?
The use of milk is divided into two categories:
Fresh Milk and milk products and Concentrated milk products.
Fresh milk products include Long-life milk UHT milk) Pasteurised milk, Yoghurt, Buttermilk, etc. About 60% of South Africa's milk production is used for Fresh Milk and fresh milk products.
Concentrated milk products include cheese, butter and milk powders.

Do we produce all the milk and milk products we need?
No, we don't. In 2005 South Africa imported the equivalent of 140 000 000 litres of milk and milk products.
